June Planting Guide

June is a great time to plant some seedlings.  The trend for this year is home grown, be it flower or vegies, so that you always have things on hand.

Flowers that make beautiful cutting flowers for vases, and look great in the garden.  Try planting poppies: Californian poppies (Eschscholzia spp.), Iceland Poppies (Papaver nudicaule) and Flanders Poppy (Papaver rhoeas), which if planted now and will be in bloom for Remembrance Day.  It’s not too late to plant sweet peas by seed either. Fill up pockets around your garden with some wonderful pansies.  There are many colours to choose from, as well as beautiful ‘faced’ varieties. For longer cutting stems, try planting stocks.  Their perfume is sensational.

In the vegie garden, it’s time for climbing peas, vitamin rich kale, broccoli, cabbage and rocket, radish and Chinese vegetables.  It’s also the best time of year to be growing lettuces, spinach and silverbeet.  Right on trend for this season is radish, beets and chard, with their ruby coloured leaves or roots making a colourful addition to your salads.  Get some on your fork!
